Getting started

Can it really write the whole book?

It writes a complete first draft from your idea and the pitch you approve, chapter by chapter, in the background. Then it's yours to read, change and finish. You can also write every word yourself.

I've never self-published. Is it for me?

Yes. A walkthrough runs the first time you open it, and the Guide in the Help menu covers every step to upload.

I've already written my book. Can I bring it in?

Yes: a Word file (.docx), Markdown or plain text. Headings become chapters.

Which Macs does it run on?

macOS 12 or later · Apple Silicon. There's no Windows version.

Do I need to be online?

Only for AI features (unless you use a model on your Mac), and once to activate your licence. Everything else works offline.

Where are my books kept?

In the books folder you choose, as plain files: the manuscript is a Markdown file you can open in any editor. Move or copy a book folder anywhere and it still works.

Price, licence and refunds

What's free?

The idea, the pitch and chapter 1 of every book, written by the AI, about 3,000 words of AI edits per book, every tool, and sample PDFs to print. There's no time limit. A licence ($149 once) finishes every book and builds the KDP pack; $49 finishes just one.

Can I start with one book and upgrade later?

Yes. A book licence ($49) counts toward the full licence for 60 days, so the upgrade costs $100. The upgrade link is in the app, under Settings → Licence.

Is it a subscription?

No. The licence is a one-time payment that covers every book you make and every 1.x update.

How many Macs can I use it on?

Every Mac you use yourself. A licence is for one person, not one computer.

Where's my licence key?

In the receipt email from our payment provider, Polar. Search your inbox (and spam) for Author Magic. You can also find it at polar.sh/1320group/portal by signing in with the email you bought with.

How do I activate?

Open Author Magic, go to Settings → Licence, and paste your key. A key for a single book goes in that book's licence screen instead.

Can I get a refund?

Within 7 days of buying, if Author Magic won't work on your Mac and we can't fix it. Ask from inside the app (Help → Contact support → Licence or billing) with the diagnostic report, so we can try to fix it first. A licence that has built a book's clean KDP pack or EPUB isn't refundable. The free version has no time limit, so please try it first. Full details are on the refund policy page.

Who will I see on my card statement?

Polar, our payment provider, sells the licence as merchant of record and handles tax. The receipt comes from them.

AI and costs

Which AI does it use?

The one you choose: Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter, or a free model on your Mac with Ollama or LM Studio, plus any OpenAI-compatible service. Connect several and pick a model for each job.

Is AI included in the price?

No. AI runs on your own account with the provider, who bills you for what you use at their rates. Author Magic shows a small estimate before you start and never marks it up. Models on your Mac are free.

I pay for ChatGPT or Claude already. Does that cover it?

No. A chat subscription and an API key are billed separately by the provider. The app needs an API key, which is billed for what you use. A model on your Mac with Ollama or LM Studio costs nothing.

Is my API key safe?

It's kept in your Mac's Keychain and only ever sent to that AI service. It's never written into your book folders or included in problem reports.

Can I cap what the AI costs?

Yes. Settings → AI → Costs sets a monthly limit. The app stops AI work when it's reached.

Can I see what the AI changed before it goes in?

Yes. Every AI change opens beside your text, paragraph by paragraph: keep the new version, keep yours, edit it, or ask for another try with a note. Nothing enters the book until you apply it, and a copy of the chapter is saved first.

Who owns what I write?

You do. We never see your manuscript. The only text that leaves your Mac is what you send to the AI service you chose.

Covers and publishing

Does KDP accept books written with AI?

Yes. KDP asks you to disclose AI-generated text, images and translations; AI-assisted editing doesn't need declaring. Author Magic fills in those answers from your dial.

What about IngramSpark or hardcover?

Version 1 is built and tested for KDP paperback and Kindle. The PDF and EPUB are standard files, but we only promise KDP's rules.

Will it help with the blurb?

It drafts one from your book if you ask. The blurb, keywords and categories go into a metadata sheet laid out like KDP's form.

Can I design the cover myself?

Yes. Start from a design, then open the studio: every title, shape, pattern and picture is a layer you can move, resize and recolour on the real KDP wrap. The spine resizes to your page count, and KDP's checks run as you design.

Does it keep track of my characters?

Yes. The story bible builds up characters, places, facts and the timeline as you write, then reads the manuscript back and flags contradictions, such as eyes that change colour or someone knowing something too early.

Does it upload to KDP for me?

No. Amazon has no publishing API, and tools that automate it drive a browser on your account, which puts the account at risk. The KDP pack numbers the files in the order KDP asks for them.

Why do my PDFs say SAMPLE?

Free builds are stamped SAMPLE so you can print and check a proof. A licence or a book licence builds the clean KDP pack and EPUB.

Fixing problems

The cover says KDP would reject it.

KDP needs at least 24 pages. Build the interior first; the cover reads its page count from it.

It says the AI service refused my key.

Make a new key on the service's site and paste it in Settings → AI. The card says what's wrong, for example no credit on the account.

The AI declined to write a passage.

Some models refuse some violence or sexual content. Soften the request, or pick another drafting model in Settings → AI.

Writing the book stopped half way.

Everything written so far is saved. Carry on writing picks up at the next chapter, and Undo the whole run restores the book from before it started.

How do I report a bug?

In the app, Help → Report a problem. It sends a short report with your Mac and app versions and recent errors. It never includes your keys or your book's text, and you can read it before it goes.
